ONEOCEAN INVESTS IN FINAL PHASE OF SUPERYACHT MARINA IN THE HEART OF BARCELONA

€5 million invested, with the addition of 8 extra superyacht berths.

The final phase of the transformation of OneOcean Port Vell, Barcelona into the Mediterranean’s premier city superyacht marina will commence mid-December 2015. OneOcean Port Vell is acknowledged by many owners and captains as a world-class homeport for superyachts since major transformation work was completed at the end of 2014, following a c. €80 million investment by UK-based Salamanca Group.
OneOcean Port Vell currently offers over 150 berths ranging from 5 to 190 metres. The redevelopment of the original Moll Pescadores section of the marina will result in 8 additional berths from 30 to 80m plus access to leading marina and yacht facilities.
€5.0 million will be invested in infrastructure, utilities, landscape, lighting and security. The eight-month programme of works, due to complete in August 2016, will be undertaken by OHL, who worked on the original four-year development of OneOcean Port Vell between 2010 and 2014.
Adjacent to the new berths stands the iconic Torre de Control building, a stunning glass tower set above the marina water with outstanding views of Barcelona. The Torre de Control building is available for business lease, providing the superyacht industry with an exceptional combination of office and berth rental opportunities and access to all the facilities at the marina including the Gallery building and OneOcean Club.
Chairman of OneOcean, Martin Bellamy explains, “The exceptional results achieved in one year after launching OneOcean Port Vell have allowed us to move swiftly to commence the works for the last stage of the marina’s redevelopment. Already at 80% capacity this winter, this expansion enables us to meet the growing demand for berthing superyachts in the Mediterranean and positions Barcelona as the leading superyacht destination with unrivalled marina facilities.”
OneOcean Port Vell – Marina and Berth Facilities

OneOcean Port Vell obtains the TPA Permit

OneOcean Port Vell Barcelona, has been granted a permit to extend the TPA tax free benefit scheme to yacht owners berthed at the marina during their stay.

Traditionally only applicable for yachts in ship yards, OneOcean Port Vell has now become one of only a few European marinas where the VAT exemption can be granted, offering a substantial advantage for owners undertaking winter works.

The works and materials, as well as the dockage and power consumption, can be paid exclusive of VAT when completed within the approved TPA window, and will allow for large savings for yachts which undergo repairs, maintenance and improvement works at OneOcean Port Vell.

The TPA permits a tax free bubble working in tandem with the fiscal authority for non EU flagged yachts that are completing repairs and improvements whilst in the EU, without causing pollution. As a marina, OneOcean Port Vell does not offer full shipyard services and there are restrictions to what works can be carried out, however normal maintenance work, interior, mechanical or electronic/electrical works are among those possible.
The yacht is required to submit itself to an approved administrator that will oversee all yacht servicing and invoicing, and provide the fiscal authority with reports before, during and after the project is finalised.

OneOcean Port Vell designed by Scob Architecture and Landscape, wins the ‘Global Project’ award at the FX International Interior Design Awards 2015

OneOcean Port Vell has won in the category of ‘Global Project’ in the 17th edition of the FX Interior Design Awards, which are the prestigious awards granted by the British group that publishes journals Design Curial, FX and Blueprint Magazine.
The judging panel of the FX Interior Design Awards, consisting of 20 independent members, praised the project as “A new interpretation of marina design with a dramatic nautical air that captures the ephemeral magic required for a singular experience”. It is the only Spanish project that was an award winner this year.

Following Salamanca Group’s $100m investment, the transformation of the superyacht marina OneOcean Port Vell at the heart of Barcelona’s old town reflects the creativity of the City and adds to its numerous attractions. The choice of SCOB, a team of architects and local landscapers, as well as their collaboration with the renowned Catalan company Escofet, underlines the marina’s focus on excellence in both construction and design.
OneOcean Port Vell is composed of two buildings built on the water and the landscaping of 16,000 m2 of docks. For the architects’ team of SCOB the general strategy of the project aims to achieve the landscape integration of the new buildings and the public space within the singular environment in which they are located, half way between the industrial port and the old town of Barcelona.
Chairman of Salamanca Group and OneOcean Ventures, Martin Bellamy said: “We are thrilled to be acknowledged for the hard work and creativity that has gone into creating OneOcean Port Vell. We were incredibly honoured to collaborate with SCOB and Escofet and their teams of expertise. This Global Project award win is a true indicator of design excellence across the world”.

Sergi Carulla, a Partner at SCOB Architecture and Landscapes added: “The project creates a system capable of finding an architectural solution not only for the buildings but also for all the landscape elements involved, establishing a close relationship between them. We applied a single unifying approach in order to achieve an image of order and continuity. The materials and colours were used to minimise the visual impact by gently integrating themselves within the environment and with the other “architectural elements” of the port: the yachts.”
The ODOS range of street furniture, designed also by SCOB and used in OneOcean Port Vell, won the award in the category of ‘Public, Leisure or Office Furniture’. This set of table, desk and stools is inspired by classrooms and dining rooms, and designed to work as an outside meeting point. In this case, the judges stated: ‘An appealing use of a new material to produce complex shapes, maximising fresh possibilities. It is practical and accessible with great design values and resistant to weather and sunlight.’
OneOcean Port Vell was also a finalist in the category of ‘Surfaces’. In this case, it has recognized the design of the lattice of white concrete designed especially for One Ocean Port Vell, by SCOB’s study. The piece, built by the Catalan company Escofet, surrounds the various buildings, creating a play on light and shadow that gives warmth and lightness to the construction. This material also provides protection against solar radiation, high winds and the saline environment.
Marcos Lopez Antich, Managing Director at Escofet added: “We were delighted to collaborate with SCOB on achieving their vision for OneOcean Port Vell. It is our latest completed project adding to our accolade of high profile projects in Barcelona such as the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona World Trade Center and Palau Sant Jordi.”
Highly acclaimed throughout the industry, the FX International Interior Design Awards recognise the best of British and international design talent from across the globe. The awards have an international status with global submissions comprising 50 per cent of entries, this year including projects by Foster + Partners and Hassell.

OneOcean Port Vell wins FX design awards

Why Capitans and crew should consider OneOcean Port Vell as a home port.

Harbor Master and previous yacht Captain, Anders Pehrson, shares what he considers to be some of the main advantages of being berthed in OneOcean Port Vell, for Captains and crew to consider:

“First and foremost, OneOcean Port Vell offers excellent protection from weather and sea. With the new marina infrastructure and ground mooring system, the yacht can be safely moored here, leaving the captain and crew to focus on other things. In addition to this, we offer services above and beyond what most of our competitors do:

  • We are fully ISPS compliant. Being in the middle of a busy city we have invested in technical back-up for our intrusion detection and have an IR perimeter alarm.
  • We have 52 CCTV cameras on a redundancy optical fiber network with monitors in a control room manned 24/7.
  • We have 24-hour mooring assistance.
  • We provide concierge services. Our reception is open every day between 07:00 and 22:00.
  • We have ample power supply for each berth, up to 1.250A, 380V, either by plug or by hard wire.
  • We supply 3Mbps symmetrical internet for free in the marina, by optical fiber or WiFi. Higher speeds are available at a reasonable rate.
  • We offer complimentary Grey & Black water collection at each 30m+ berth, regardless of quantity.
  • We offer fuel bunkering services, by truck.
  • We have generous storage units for rent just behind the yachts, with vehicle access and parking.
  • We have provisioning services available in-house, and fresh food markets nearby.
  • We are 300 metres from MB´92 shipyard, one of the yards of reference in the Mediterranean and capable of hauling the largest yachts in the world.
  • We are 300 metres from Pinmar for yacht painting and supplies. A Pinmar supplies van visits the Marina daily.
  • We do not apply commission or charges for sub-contractors in the Marina.
  • We permit interior and discrete exterior works.
  • We can provide floating work platforms.

Celebrities, cocktails and racing combine for a weekend of Formula 1 action

Famed Israeli model Bar Refaeli was one of the celebrity guests joining Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa during a weekend of Formula 1 entertainment at Marina Port Vell.

This eclectic concoction of live music, club DJ’s, Martini cocktails, fast cars, tapas and street fun mixed in with the yachts, owners, guest and crew created an amazing party atmosphere that kicked of the summer cruising season in style. Berths were full with over 60 additional yachts booked at the marina over the weekend to take advantage of the sunshine and racing; many hosting the F1 teams between hectic race schedules.

The weekend kicked off on Thursday with the Martini Racing Terrazza, located between Sota Muralla and Spanish Quay, showcasing tapas by who many consider the world’s best tapas chef, Albert Adrià, accompanied by exclusive new Martini cocktail creations. Yacht owners joined Barcelona’s socially elite and press for a F1 presentation, followed by the first global Martini bartender competition at OneOcean’s BlueWave cocktail bar where more than 50 international bartenders attended.

Friday welcomed almost 100 guests, including superyacht owners and captains, at OneOcean Club for the annual Yacht Rendezvous gala dinner by the International Seakeepers Society which highlighted the Discovery Yachts’ mission.  Throughout the weekend there were many supercars gracing the docks including a couple of McLaren 360S, a Ferrari California, an AC Cobra, Maserati’s, AMG A45 Mercedes to mention but a few. “Marina Port Vell and the new OneOcean Club are well set up to take on major events like the F1.

I had a great time over the weekend and would love to come back again next year to start the summer season,” says the Owner of 41-metre yacht Komokwa, Brian O’Sullivan. “There was such a wonderful atmosphere at the gala dinner – it’s unusual to have such a fine-dining experience within a marina, so close to the yachts,” says the captain of 50-metre motor yacht Septimus, Jamie Whitehead. The fun continued on Sunday at OneOcean Club as more than 300 members, guests and F1 teams gathered to enjoy chilled out music by DJs, tapas and cocktails as the sun set over the city.

A bright future for chartering Spanish waters

Marina Port Vell was the site for a roundtable event with top industry players where recent changes to the matriculation tax laws were discussed. The focus was to share the most up-to-date information in order for companies in the superyacht industry to provide the best advice to their clients, as well as understand how these laws will continue to affect the maritime sector.

Chaired by Norma Trease of Salamanca Group, the event included presentations by Miguel Angel Serra of maritime law firm Garrigues and CEO of S.O.S. Yachting, Alex Mazzoni, who handles legal and fiscal issues for charter yachts in the Mediterranean. A lively discussion followed where experts identified benefits to the yachting industry from the changes to the taxes and conceived practical ideas of how to move forward, including the update of economic impact data since chartering in Spain has begun.

The published changes, or exceptions to the matriculation tax, include the ability for owners to use their commercially registered yachts in Spanish waters (with a proper charter contract and payment of charter fee), and allowing EU and non-EU vessels to register for charter licenses to operate in Spain. These changes have been promoted with the help of Spanish maritime associations including AEGY, ANEN and Barcelona Nautical Cluster.

“The beneficial changes to the matriculation tax and its interpretation have caused confusion and are not yet fully understood by the yacht marketplace, nor by localised Spanish tax officials, which has resulted in some companies recommending to avoid Spanish waters,” says Norma. “But the future of chartering is Spain looks better and better; as long as required paperwork is handled correctly and the Spanish government continues to recognise the importance of the yachting sector to the economy of Spain’s maritime economy.”

Issuing charter licenses requires a paperwork trail and several businesses are already helping yachts acquire these licenses – these include yacht agencies, tax advisors, maritime attorneys and companies such as S.O.S. Yachting and Tax Marine Barcelona that specialise in providing fiscal solutions to charter yachts in Spain, or consultancies such as Network Marine Consultants. “An estimated 70-plus yachts up to and above 65m have already applied for and received charter licenses for Spanish waters, and this number is expected grow exponentially in 2015,” says Norma.

A new hub for business

The Gallery at Marina Port Vell has welcomed new residents this month with Elite Crew International, BWA Yachting, Linen Lintea, Rivera Lifestyle Management and Pantaenius moving in to their new office spaces overlooking the water.

Florida-based crew recruitment agency Elite Crew International chose Marina Port Vell for its initial move across the pond due to its strong yachting heritage, the quality of its marinas, shipyards and crew training institutes, and its international airport close to the heart of the city. “As we have seen, Barcelona has become a desirable and popular yachting destination, so it was an easy decision,” says owner and founder Karina Befeld.

“The location of MPV couldn’t be better. On any given day we can look out and see many of our yachts sitting right there in the marina. Since we love to offer a hands-on approach, what can be better than that?” Karina says the new office space is open, bright and modern with many facilities on site to please both captains and crew.

“From day one everyone at MPV has been extremely welcoming,” she says. “There is a strong community feel with everyone striving for the same goal. Even with the obstacles involved in setting up a new location, MPV helped everything to run smoothly and provided the support needed to make this happen.” A location that is brand new for some, moreover, is old for others. Superyacht agency BWA Yachting is already located in MPV and has been for the past 10 years – not to mention its office further down the road at refit facility Marina Barcelona ‘92.

And what better way to celebrate 10 years in Barcelona and the first-hand experience of the city’s maritime evolution than a rejuvenation that matches that of the marina itself. BWA Yachting has taken over four offices, covering a sweeping 100 square-metres. Doubling its offices, though, is a move that comes at a price, and begs the question of why it is this capital city that has been the catalyst for transatlantic crossings and expansions of this scale.

“It’s an investment and a statement that we believe in the project so much that we’re going to make the office our headquarters for the country,” explains Antonella Della Pietra, managing partner at BWA Yachting Spain. For Della Pietra, Barcelona is a city that ticks all the boxes of yachting, and with the new development Della Pietra believes others will feel the same. “Barcelona has absolutely amazing potential.

Most of our offices suffer from the seasonality of the industry, but with the proximity to the shipyard it’s one of the locations where we can offer assistance all year round. The idea is to make Barcelona the home port for many of the vessels that are cruising around the summer.”
